Xiaomi electric cars sell out at record speed—can they beat Tesla in the global EV race?

Date :
At a time when the electric vehicle market is more competitive than ever, Xiaomi’s entry onto the scene has turned more than a few heads—especially those of established industry giants like Tesla. Can this tech heavyweight really give the big names a run for their money?

Xiaomi’s Lightning-Fast Electric Car Debut

With the launch of the Xiaomi YU7 SUV, the brand has firmly established itself as a serious player in the electric vehicle market. On June 26, 2025, during its commercial debut, Xiaomi registered an astonishing 289,000 reservations within just one hour. Not long after, deliveries to the first eager customers were underway. Suffice to say, that’s a lot of buzz for a newcomer—or for anyone, really!

A Demand That Outpaces Production

July continued this record-breaking streak: Xiaomi delivered 6,024 vehicles, with another 6,042 fresh orders rolling in. The demand is vastly outstripping the company’s current production capacity. This has forced Xiaomi to accelerate its manufacturing expansion plans, ensuring that fans aren’t left waiting too long for their new rides.

Right now, Phase 1 of the Xiaomi factory is running at full tilt, boasting an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles. But with the order books overflowing, work is already underway on Phase 2—set to double that capacity by adding production for another 150,000 vehicles per year. Not a bad problem to have, if you ask most automakers.

Setting Ambitious Global Targets

Xiaomi’s goal for 2025 is nothing if not ambitious: the company aims to deliver 350,000 electric vehicles worldwide. The numbers so far? In the first half of 2025 alone, Xiaomi has already delivered 150,000 cars. To hit that bold target, Xiaomi will need to produce and deliver an average of 33,000 vehicles every month.

Rapid Growth in a Crowded Arena

With both the SU7 sedan and the new YU7 SUV making waves, Xiaomi is quickly becoming a fierce competitor for established brands like Tesla, BYD, and Volkswagen. That’s no small feat—even Tesla had to start somewhere (though probably with fewer initial reservations).

The impressive sales figures leave little doubt: Xiaomi is far more than just a tech company best known for smartphones. It’s now a major contender in the global EV market. If current trends continue, Xiaomi might soon be counted among the world’s largest automakers. Watch out, Elon—you might have some company at the top sooner than you think.
